Shimla, also known as Simla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and also the administrative headquarters of the Shimla district. It has the importance as a summer capital for a country that has been declared after the independence of India. Shimla has been a favorite tourist destination in India and worldwide for its unique beauty. Shimla also serves as a convenient base for exciting adventure sports such as skiing, trekking, fishing, and golf. Although the British Empire is over, its imprint still appears in Shimla. Shimla is named after the goddess Shyamala, who is an incarnation of Kali.
Location
Shimla which lies at a height of 6890 feet above sea level, is the most beautiful hill station in the country, that extends over 12 kilometers in length. Shimla is located on top of a miniature hill of the Himalayas at an altitude of about 2,200 meters, 114 km north of Chandigarh. Shimla has a height of approximately 7267 feet and is shaped like a semicircle where cold winds are flowing for the whole year.
History
After the Gorkha War of 1814-16, Shimla was established to rest in a safe place for the troops. Shimla is characterized by its cool climate, picturesque natural landscapes, snow-capped mountain landscapes, pine and deodar forests and an attractive urban landscape of colonial architecture. It used to be the summer capital of India for these reasons.
In 1864, Shimla became the capital of the British. Shimla is also famous as a tourist destination. Shimla was discovered by the British in 1819. Charles Kennedy built the first summer house here. Soon Shimla was noticed by Lord William Bentinck, who was the Governor-General of India from 1828 to 1835.
The residence of the British viceroy (residence of the president) was built here at the end of the 19th century. It currently has an Institute for Advanced Studies.
